The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo made this known during the 2013 Ministerial Platform in Abuja while presenting his Ministry’s score card for the past two years.
Prof. Chinedu Nebo said that available generation capacity has increased from 3,700MW in 2010 to 6,522MW in 2012-2013, and that average number of hours of power availability per day has also increased from 8 hours in 2010 to 16 hours in 2012.
The Minister reaffirmed that Rural Electrification Agency (REA) which was reactivated in June 2012 is to improve rural access to electricity. He said that the Ministry has developed a draft REA Strategy and Implementation Plan and it is being finalized.
REA, he said, will focus on increased exploitation of renewable and the facilitation of rural electrification projects.
The Minister pleaded with Nigerians to help and put an end to vandalism, as vandalism is making a mess of the administration’s good works. Vandals, he said for example, attacked more than 60 times to retrieve coppers that worth not more than N10, 000, but N70m was used later by the government to restore it.
Mr Labaran Maku, the Minister of Information in his remarks, said that the story of our power policy has changed from public sector driven to private sector driven, as power is a major priority for the present administration.
