Lagos-Ibadan Road To Be Completed In 2 Years - Jonathan


President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday launched the reconstruction and expansion works on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and declared that adequate funds had been provided for the project.

Approval has be granted for the award of the contracts with the total contract sum of N167billion with a completion period of 48 months. The two contractors to handle the project are Messrs Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and Reynolds Construction Company Limited who emerged as successful bidders for section Lagos-Sagamu Interchange) and section II (Sagamu Interchange-Ibadan) respectively.

President Jonathan, at the Sagamu interchange, venue of the ceremony, recalled that the expressway was constructed about 35 years ago, saying that the reconstruction was overdue and pledged that the project would be delivered on scheduled.

“We have made arrangement for adequate funds; we shall deliver our pledge on schedule. Comprehensive construction is overdue and that is the reason we go into partnership with reputable companies,” he stated.

The President further noted that the road takes over 250,000 vehicles on daily basis, and known to be the biggest in Africa, hence its importance to the national economy with 60 per cent of our economy depending on the road.”

He appeal to motorists to bear the pains as work commenced on the road in earnest.

“Today we are reconstructing the road and we shall deliver on time. We shall deliver dividends of democracy’. Jonathan said.

Earlier, minister of works, Mike Onolememen, said the project was another major milestone in the President Jonathan administration’s commitment to delivering better road infrastructure to the nation as contained in its transformation agenda.
