The Nigerian Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba has called for the application of the necessary political will in attending to the responsibilities of Navies in Africa.
According to him, this can make the continent benefit from the abundant wealth which the sea provides.
Admiral Ezeoba says with the sea occupying three quarters of the earth, there is need to install relevant infrastructures that will give Africa due advantage to tap the unexplored resources of the sea for national and continental development.
Legal frame
It will be very important to have an enduring legal frame work that will allow African countries to interact freely on the sea and to build structures that will help the continent promote economic development, he stated.
Admiral Ezeoba is in South Africa in pursuance of the bilateral defence protocol signed between Nigeria and South Africa during the State visit of President Jonathan in May.
Mutual cooperation
The Director of South Africa's Naval Personnel Admiral, Asiel Kubo says Africa stands a better chance to reap the benefit of such mutual cooperation which will help to properly police the continents territorial waters.
Admiral Asiel said cooperation between Nigeria and Pretoria in defence matters was long overdue.
Nigeria and South Africa must lead the way for other African Navies to follow because in terms of the contemporary developments and safety, harmonizing best practice amongst Africa nations will make the much desired difference, Admiral Asiel explained.
