The 2013 edition of the championship featured over 100,000 students from 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Purple Krown College Enugu has won the 2013 edition of NNPC/Shell Cup. The school defeated Government Secondary School Wuse Abuja with a lone goal to clinch the coveted NNPC/Shell Cup.
The final match was played on March 24 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium Lagos. For winning the cup, Purple Krown College Enugu received a monetary reward of N2.5m for the development of sports facilities in the school, while each member of the team got a cash prize of N50,000. The school was also picked by the Nigeria Schools Sports Federation to represent the country at the schools’ tournament (Kings Cup) slated for October this year in the United Kingdom.
In the past, secondary school students in Nigeria were dropping out of school to pursue careers in football. Fifteen years ago, the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC JV) initiated the All Nigeria Secondary Schools Football Championship (NNPC/Shell Cup) to arrest this trend by promoting football and education hand-in-hand.
The 2013 edition witnessed the participation of 2,500 secondary schools and 75,000 students across Nigeria.
