Our dam and reservoir projects are to stimulate different food crops’ production, says Sarah Ochekpe.

The Minister of Water  Resources, Mrs Sarah Reng Ochekpe has said that  the construction of dams and reservoirs has become necessary  to complement the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture at ensuring food security.   She said,  “This is because dams and reservoirs will ultimately stimulate the production of different food crops, thus, increasing food production.”

This was made known by the Minister while rendering the mid-term report of the progress and achievements recorded by her Ministry at the ongoing ministerial platform being held at the National Press Centre, Radio House, Abuja.

According to the Minister, dams have been constructed in the following States: Obudu Dam in Cross Rivers State, Goronyo Dam project, Sokoto , Oyan Dam, as well as Ilesha Dam in Osun State.

The Minister further noted that in a bid to ensure the timely completion of water projects, Mr President made available additional funds for the Mnistry to carry out its mandate of providing safe drinking water for the citizenry.

In addition, she noted that 545 hand pumps, 885 motorised (solar powered) boreholes and several other water schemes have been completed across the country.
