In a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos, Mrs Olajumoke Araba, UNIC’s officer-in-charge, said the seminar would focus on violations of journalist rights.
Securing the safety of journalists has continued to be a major challenge around the world today.
There is an upward trend in the killings of journalists, media workers and social media workers.
It is in response to highlighting these issues that UNIC is organising this seminar to mark WPFD''.
Araba said that the seminar would also dwell on issues of safety of journalists, its implication for the right to freedom of expression, as well as the UN action plan in this direction.
She added that the seminar would also focus on the resolution of the UN Human Rights Council on the safety of journalists.
According to the UNIC official, the seminar will provide opportunity to formulate strategy on how to implement the UN’s action plan in Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of seminar is ``Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in all media.”
May 3 every year is an opportunity to reflect on violations of the right to freedom of expression and the challenges faced by journalists in the course of their assignments. (NAN)
