CHAN 2014: Mba’s brace sinks Elephants

AFCON 2013 revelation, Sunday Mba, was again the showman as the Super Eagles demolished their Ivoirian counterparts by 4-1 in a crucial Africa Nations Championship qualifier at the Ahmadu Belllo Stadium in Kaduna on Saturday.

Mba had a hand in all the four goals scored by Nigeria before a capacity crowd in Kaduna as he netted a brace and also provided two assists for his teammates.
The opening goal for Nigeria was a beauty to behold as Kano Pillars’ Gambo Mohammed made the best of the good ball work by Afcon hero, Sunday Mba, who laid a sweet pass across to the lanky striker who turned round well and placed the ball to the far right of goalkeeper Gbohouo Sylvain to register the first goal in the 14th minute.

Mba himself doubled the lead in the 28th minute off a power shot outside the box.
However the smooth sailing Eagles were pegged back in the 44th minute by Coulibaliy Fousseny to make scores 2-1 after the first 45 minutes.

On resumption of the second half, the Eagles, fully aware they needed a big win, piled more pressure on the Ivorians, which saw them committing fouls that ended seeing two players, Asale Rodger and Gloudoeu Baresi, getting red carded.

Nigeria got the third goal from the penalty spot, which was calmly converted by Mba while the icing on the cake came in the 83rd minute after substitute Ede Ifeanyi held his nerve in the Ivorian box and scored Nigeria’s fourth goal of the day to take a healthy lead into the second leg two weeks from now.
