DHQ WILL INVESTIGATE LEVEL OF INVOLVEMENT OF ALLEGED TERRORISTS

NAN-H-123 Suspects

Abuja, June 17, 2013 (NAN) The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Monday promised that all suspects arrested in the communities where terrorists were active would be investigated to ensure their level of involvement.

This is contained in a statement issued by Brig.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, Director of Defence Information in Abuja.

He said that every effort had been put in place to protect the suspects from any harm while in custody, where necessary.

Olukolade expressed satisfaction on the activities of some individuals, particularly the vigilante groups and youths, whose efforts, he said, led to the arrest of many terrorists in their communities.

He said, these gestures are commendable as they underscore the desired positive civil-military collaboration necessary for the success of the ongoing internal security operation.

The director said while the DHQ acknowledged the contribution of individuals and groups aimed at complementing the effort of security agents in restoring law and order, there was the need for caution in the security operation.

DHQ assured that the right of every citizen to fair hearing would not be jettisoned in the name of mopping up the terrorists in the communities.

DHQ added that due processes had been put in place to make sure that the activities of youths were not hijacked by those with ulterior motives or sinister intentions.

This, he added, became necessary in order to ensure that the process was not used to settle scores or witch-hunt perceived enemies. (NAN)
