Sokoto Sponsors 150 Teachers for Post Graduate Programmes in Uganda.

The Sokoto State government, has sponsored 150 primary school teachers for a post graduate programmes at the Islamic University, Uganda.

Addressing the teachers in Sokoto shortly before their departure to Uganda Saturday, Governor Aliyu Wamakko described the move as a right step towards enhancing education in the state, saying the future of education is bleak without quality teachers at the primary level.

He stated that the teachers were admitted into the Masters programme in Education Management and Post Graduate Diploma in Education for a duration of two years.

The governor explained that the gesture was part of government’s efforts to train its primary school teachers with a view to improving education standard in the state in the long term.
According to him, the present administration was determined to go extra mile to enable its citizens acquire education in any part of the globe.

Wamakko noted that primary education is the bedrock of the development of any nation, stressing that without sound primary education, the future of education was bleak in the state.
“As you are aware, sound primary education is key to quality education at the tertiary level. So, without giving adequate priority to our primary school teachers, the future of education in Sokoto is bleak.

“Thus, it is in a bid to improve the quality of our primary school teachers that government decided to sponsor them to Uganda so that by the time they are back, they will impact sound education on our pupils in primary schools,”Wamakko said.

Wamakko said the state government took such measures to sponsor its teachers, following the 2012 report of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) which rated Sokoto as the state with the least qualified teachers in the federation.

He stressed that it was against the backdrop that the state government decided to collaborate with the Islamic University Uganda to train its primary school teachers.
He maintained that the state has quality teachers at both primary and secondary level, lamenting that what it lacked was proper supervision of schools.

The governor announced that his administration had concluded arrangements to sponsor another batch of 150 primary school teachers for a degree programme in education at the Islamic University Uganda by September .
