The ship building yard, when completed, is expected to help end the millions of dollars that the Nigerian economy loses annually as capital flight to foreign ship building companies that Nigerians patronise while procuring vessels.
The Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Patrick Akpobolokemi, says the move is meant to drive sustainable development and step up capacity building in the maritime sector of the economy so that Nigeria can take its rightful place among the serious maritime nations across the world.
According to him, the shipyard which would also have facilities for dry docking of oceangoing vessels will also enable cadets from the Maritime Academy of Nigerian (MAN), Oron, to have opportunity for practical training experience during their sea time.
He said the management of the agency has already secured an approval for the development of the shipyard but the cost of the shipyard is yet to be ascertained.
